Choose the Crop Spacing Before the Hole Diameter

Plant spacing is an agronomic decision. The correct distance can change with the crop, cultivar, climate, soil fertility, pruning method, trellis system and expected harvest access. A compact determinate tomato and a vigorous indeterminate tomato should not automatically use the same pattern. Neither should bush cucumbers and long-vining cucumbers.

Use the plant label, seed supplier instructions or a local university Extension recommendation as the starting point. If several credible recommendations differ, check how each crop was trained and grown before selecting a number.

Bare-root plants and crowns

Bare-root strawberries and similar crowns need enough working space to arrange their roots and position the crown at the correct soil level. Hole diameter should not be selected from stem width alone.

Crown-forming plants also need the fabric kept away from the growing point. An opening that closes over the crown or presses against it may interfere with inspection and maintenance.

Plants with several stems

No. South Dakota State University Extension describes two- to three-inch-diameter holes as a useful way to limit exposed soil while leaving room to plant into the ground below the fabric. That recommendation appears within its own landscape-fabric preparation system and should be treated as a practical reference rather than a universal specification.

Two inches equals approximately 5.1 cm, and three inches equals approximately 7.6 cm. A hole in this range may suit many small vegetable transplants, but it may be too narrow for a large root ball or unnecessarily large for a small plug. Plant type and installation method still control the decision.

Do not order a large quantity from a generic hole-size chart alone. Test the proposed opening with the actual transplant container, planting tool and fabric. The test should include removing the plant from its tray, positioning the roots, setting the correct planting depth and cleaning loose soil from the surface.

Crop Spacing Examples—and Their Limits

Aligned Rows or a Staggered Pattern?

Aligned rows

An aligned grid places the holes directly opposite one another. It is easy to measure, matches many straight drip layouts and creates clear channels between plants. It may also simplify mechanical or repetitive field work.

Staggered rows

A staggered pattern offsets the second row so each plant sits between two plants in the neighboring row. This can distribute canopies more evenly across a bed and use the surface efficiently.

Staggering does not justify reducing every spacing measurement. Plants still need the growing room recommended for the crop. Measure the shortest center-to-center distance between neighboring plants, including diagonal neighbors.

Fit the Pattern to the Fabric Width

The full roll width is not necessarily available for planting. Outer areas may be needed for fastening, burying or overlapping the edges. Beds with side walls may also need clearance so leaves and stems are not pressed against the frame.

Usable planting width = fabric width − left edge clearance − right edge clearance

For evenly spaced rows, approximate row-center spacing = usable planting width ÷ number of spaces between rows

A two-row layout contains one space between row centers. A three-row layout contains two. This calculation determines the geometric spacing; it does not confirm that the resulting spacing is suitable for the crop.

For example, an 80 cm-wide fabric with 10 cm reserved on each side has 60 cm of usable planting width. Two evenly positioned rows would be approximately 60 cm apart. Before approving that layout, verify that 60 cm fits the mature crop, irrigation position and bed access.

Estimate the Number of Planting Positions

Establish the beginning and ending offsets before calculating the number of holes. These offsets keep the first and last plants away from bed ends, frames, greenhouse walls or roll overlaps.

Usable row length = bed length − beginning offset − ending offset

Approximate positions per row = whole number of spacing intervals that fit within the usable length + 1

Suppose a bed is 10 m long, with 0.5 m left at each end. The usable row length is 9 m. At 45 cm center-to-center spacing, 20 complete intervals fit, producing 21 potential positions per row.

This is a layout example, not a crop recommendation. Confirm the 45 cm spacing independently before using the result.

Plan the Irrigation at the Same Time

Planting holes and drip irrigation should be designed as one layout. A perfectly spaced opening is not useful if the nearest emitter falls outside the developing root zone.

Mark the drip lines and emitters on the same drawing used for the planting pattern. If drip tape will sit beneath the fabric, place and test it before securing the roll. Avoid cutting or thermally forming openings over an installed line unless the method prevents damage.

After installation, run the irrigation and inspect several planting openings. Look for wetting near the root zone, dry pockets caused by uneven soil and water collecting in depressions.

When a Fixed Hole Pattern Is the Wrong Choice

Plain fabric may be more practical when a bed contains several crops, plant positions are determined on site or spacing changes each season. Forcing mixed vegetables into one repeating pattern can waste openings and crowd larger plants.

Fixed holes can also be inconvenient for crops managed through runners, dense sowing or frequent succession planting. A strawberry matted-row system, for example, does not behave like a fixed hill system in which runners are routinely removed.
